Final Fantasy X - Traveling Mi'ihen Highroad
This weekend we got together at Tryn's house and continued on where we left off with FFX. We got together Saturday because Myth was a slacker and had a bad night Saturday. It all worked out as my son was sick and needed to borrow his nebulizer, so he brought that over on Saturday. Friday I was pretty busy as well, installing Ursus' new motherboard that had just arrived from Gigabyte. Ursus' and I watched Terminator episodes and played Too Human for the Xbox 360 while he copied a bunch of TV and Movies to his newly fixed computer.
On Saturday Myth and I continued the Final Fantasy X main story a bit and traveled down the Mi'ihen Highroad. One thing we noticed that was confusing about the guide is it lists all the items you can get by talking to the travelers, but it does not list them in order or show them on the map. One of the items was our first Level 1 Key Sphere to unlock a node on the Sphere Grid. We traveled up and down the first couple paths a few times to make sure we didn't miss it and then realized there are several other zones the item could have been located in.
Once we reached the resting spot called Rin's Travel Agency, we recruited Ropp for Blitzball as he is just about the best defender you can get. More on Blitzball in a bit, because what came next was a Boss Fight: Chocobo Eater.
Chocobo Eater:
Now the trick with the Chocobo Eater is there are 3 outcomes. You can get pushed off a ledge, kill em, or push him off the opposite ledge. Pushing him off the ledge delivers the best rewards but its also the hardest (of course). It took us several tries but we managed to push that jerk right off the ledge, and happily took our reward of two Level 1 Key Spheres!!! Because we had the game running a bit faster than normal and we were using save/restore states, it was relatively painless to restore a few times till we got it right.
The Strategy
First, deal some quick damage to pop him on his back before he pushes the party off the ledge.
TIPS:
We learned several tips tonight regarding Blitzball so I will detail these below:
Resetting Tournament Prizes with save states
If a save state is made just before the Tournament becomes available, it's pretty easy to restore and then force a different set of prizes.
Changing Blitzball Defense
Okay, so save states can only do so much for a Blitzball game. We have found that many times actions are predetermined by the way the players meet. And if you save once there is a confrontation, the outcome of a certain action will always be the same even though there is a random factor for all actions. This random factor was determined as the conflict was created or shortly before. What we did find that can change outcomes is your defense. At one point in the game, we had a save state while the other team had the ball. They took it in and scored and every time we choose different defending attacks on the confrontations, they still were able to score.
BUT! if we changed our automatic defense stance, our players acted slightly different on the field, and in turn, the opposing team choose different actions and never scored. We had just about given up trying everything, and then we found this nice nugget of insight into how the Blitzball actions for the opposing team are decided.
Techcopy Distance
We realized that the player does not have to be that close to learn techs through tech copy. And for the Goalie, they can learn them directly from the other goalie all the way across the field. I would estimate that for the rest of the players they would have to be at least 1/2 of the field away.
Sharing Top Scorer
The most exciting realization was that it is possible to get 2 or maybe even 3 of the Top Scorer prizes in a Tournament, and especially League. We did not get to test it out, but we found a post the online that explained the situation. If more than one player from the same team ties for Top Scorer, you get a prize for each player with that top score. We are very excited to try this out.
Next week I am looking forward to some more Blitzball and finishing up Mi'ihen Highroad. See you all next week.

First, deal some quick damage to pop him on his back before he pushes the party off the ledge.
- Haste Lulu and have her nuke with Fire. Hate Auron and have him smack him with Power Break to lower his attack. Keep this up till he is on his back.
- Now you need to buff up what you haven't yet. Cheer, Guard, Focus. Get Yuna in and hasted. Lulu needs to Focus a few times till she is hitting for about 600-700.
- Now Yuna will keep the party healed (pray), and toss cures at the Chocobo Eater when needed so he doesn't die before falling off the edge.
- Now with Lulu, Auron, and Yuna, continue dealing damage as fast as possible as well as keep everyone (including the Chocobo Eater) in safe HP levels. You will continue to push the Chocobo Eater back until Finlay he falls off the edge.
Once the Chocobo Eater was defeated we turned our attention to Blitzball again. We were happily surprised to see that Ropp had come with lots of learned abilities. We used a Tournament trick that we perfected tonight to reset the Tournament prizes until we got what we wanted and then ran through the Tournament. In order to receive the prizes we wanted, we had to come in 3rd place, but still be the top scorer. It turns out it was pretty easy despite my concerns. We only had to lose the second game to come in 3rd, so we had plenty of time to make our scores. We stomped the others with Top Scorer, Tidus-9 vs the other team-3.

We learned several tips tonight regarding Blitzball so I will detail these below:
Resetting Tournament Prizes with save states
If a save state is made just before the Tournament becomes available, it's pretty easy to restore and then force a different set of prizes.
- Continue checking the Blitzball Tournament until its no longer available. Between checking you can wait, run in circles, or zone back and forth.
- Once the Tournament is NOT available, zone and come back an make a save state just before checking the sphere.
- Now check the sphere. If the Tournament is not available, then zone again, save state next to sphere, and then check again. Continue this until the Tournament IS available.
- This is the most important step. Now that you know the Tournament will be available just after this save state, we didn't want to lose this save state. RESTORE to just before you checked the sphere.
- Now we just need to kill about 10-20 game seconds and then create a New save state.
- Check the Tournament prizes should have changed. If they are what you want, then you are good to go. If not, RESTORE, wait 10-20 seconds, and then save again.
- Repeat these steps until the desired rewards are available. Remember, its very important to create a save state after you wait the 10-20 seconds, but before you have activated the sphere.
