Final Fantasy XII - The Salikawood (1)

Good evening, and welcome to this blog version of a Let's Play for Final Fantasy XII. Joe and I get together a few times each month to play our favorite games, usually including a game from the Final Fantasy series. Tonight we continue our trek through Final Fantasy XII (FFXII).

Last game session we completed a few Hunts and traveled through Nalbina Fortress and the Mosphorane Highwaste. We just make it into the beginning of The Salikawood.

Tonight we will explore what The Salikawood has to offer; rare monsters and good chests alike.

In the first section, we run into these little pumpkin creatures and are sleeping half the time you find them. They make a nice chain if you can keep them respawning. From treasure chests, we pick up a Gokuu Pole and Chaos Mace.

Moving on to the west a bit, we pickup a Rose Corsage, and start our looking for our first rare mob; the Spee. This is a tricky one, because it is invisible... like a ghost that is barely there. We zoned in and out many times, and the finally we spotted it. In its invisible state, it looked kind of like the Predator when in stealth mode; it is only visible when it moves around. In order to attack it, you have to case reflect on a party member, and then cast an area effect damage spell on the party member that will get reflected off to hit all nearby monsters.

Next, we begin our hunt for the Carrot Stalk. We go to the spawn location, but it's not there. Paying closer attention we find that we have to be passive for our entire time in Salikawood or it won't show up. Running back out of Salikawood, we make our way back to the spawn point holding the FLEE button the whole time. This time Carrot Stalk (a huge Marlboro type creature) is visible and looking quite menacing. We jump into battle and get hit with Bad Breath, completely incapacitating the entire party. We soon realize that we are no match for Carrot Stalk, and will have to come back when we have better protection from the status ailments (maybe after we get the ribbon).

One of the things that we like to do when exploring a new area is to find out where all the exits go. It turns out that the western exit goes into a dungeon looking zone called The Necrohol of Nabudis. We are treated to a short cutscene where we are advised NOT to go in. We do venture in a bit and concur that the mobs look pretty tough, and then head back to the Salikawood.

Continuing on in the Salikawood, there is a boss fight with King Bomb. It was an interesting fight because he kept spawning smaller bombs as we were fighting him. My favorite part of the fight was casting Blizara to nuke them all together.

In another section, we search and kill the Hunt Braegh. This lighting type horse was easy to find and easy to take down.

In the northern section of The Salikawood, we exit into the next zone to uncover the Nabreus Deadlands. We make a mental note to come back and try to explore this zone another time. The try to take the 1st mob inside, but it quickly turned into 3 mobs, so we high tailed it out.

Make our way back the save crystal, and call it a night. Take care and Happy Game Nights!
